act 6Back in August, 2000 I ran an Act 6.0 launch event. I was super excited as it had been over 4 years since a previous release of Act, and this version had Outlook integration!

I planned for the event for months in advance. I enlisted over a dozen Act Add-On vendors to attend and have booths to display their products. I advertised the event in the local papers (remember those?), enlisted dozens of volunteers, booked a great hotel with a centralized location and got sponsors to provide refreshments.  I had 100 some people RSVP. I thought I was all set. Until…

Act 6 was sold in a physical box in those days and InterAct Commerce (the manufacturer of Act at that time)  sent me 125 boxes to sell at the event; unfortunately they scheduled the software to arrive the day AFTER the event. InterAct Commerce also sent out event notifications to all Act users “within a 100 radius of Fort Lauderdale;” unfortunately that 100 miles includes a whole lot of swamp to the west and water to the south and east. And, as the 5 o’clock event drew near the skies grew darker and darker; any of you who have witnessed a South Florida summer-time squall know exactly what I mean. My event was doomed!

3 o’clock found me was dressed in old jeans, standing on a ladder and hanging a banner. The hotel manager found me with a very concerned look on his face. “Rut roh”, I thought, bracing for more bad news.  The manager went on to explain that there were over 100 people waiting in line in the rain to attend the event and he was concerned for their safety. By the time the event officially opened at 5 PM we had over 500 people in attendance.

Wow. Those were the days! And those Act 6 users have remained loyal. So loyal in fact that many of them are still using Act 6. There is only one thing that is preventing Act 6 users from using their software for another 10 years: technology!
